Painter 11 - Compatible with the m2 Digital Painting Tutorial by iDC

Corel has released a new version for my favorite natural media painting and drawing program!  And it rocks! Continue through to view the painting steps I used to create this photo painting and see a listing of my favorite new and enhanced features offered in the PAINTER 11 version.

The m2 custom brush set is the focus of my Painter Tutorial titled “Digital Painting & the Photograph - m2 3/4 Figure in Oils”  for Painter X and higher.  I have tested and found all of the m2 brushes to work as intended.  Therefore  my  training and brush set will apply to Painter 11 as well as Painter X.  Remember that you should kick-up your memory allocation in the program preferences to ensure the best performance.

For this example I began by loading in the m2 custom workspace, which happily loads the m2  custom brush set with a click of the mouse…just as it does in Painter X.  Yeah!

Since the new color management feature recognizes my color profile from the Adobe Photoshop file I am opening, I do not need to make any color tweaks.  I start with two tools found in the Painter 11 “Auto Paint” window to prepare my image for painting. The  Edge Effect “Jagged” gives me the white area around the outer edges of my photo & then I added “Smart Blur” to achieve a quick “one-button” skin smoothing step in Painter 11 (also in Painter 10).  Following that, I made a Quick Clone of my photograph and began using the m2 brushes beginning at the top of the list starting with my first under-painting brush  “Sloppy Bristle” and then worked my way to the last custom m2 brush “Hard Highlights”.

I have included some of the m2 brush steps here:

Beginnings with the m2 "Sloppy Bristle" brush.

Under-painting continues with the second m2 brush "Loaded Palette Knife".

Next up Skin!  Painting with the three m2 "Skin" brushes:  3,4 & 5.

Using the m2  "Add Color" brush I applied raw orange color to the book edge and
some golden yellow to her baby hair.  The above shows the effect once the raw color
has been blended with the next m2 brush in the list.

Blended raw color close-up of the book's edge.

Final Photo Painting after  working on the blouse of the gal holding baby Ella
with the m2 "Clothing Brush".

Corel’s Painter 11 - New Features

Color management includes individual color profiles per document and improved color recognition for imported files, which result in better color matches. Having fewer color corrections to make streamlines your workflow. In addition, the fresh, simplified interface for color-management operations makes it easier to control color profiles when you create or open files

New Hard Media controls for pencils, chalk, markers, and pens that mimic the behavior of their traditional counterparts more accurately than the tools of any other software.

New RealBristle™ Dry Media - Marker, pen, pencil and chalk media reproduce the look and feel of their real-life counterparts in a way that no other software can.

Marker - intensify color with each new marker stroke so you can color in one continuous shade or create a buildup of color

Pen - choose to create fine pen strokes, or thick strokes and ink deposits, by changing the velocity of your stroke. The faster you go, the thinner the line; the slower you go, the thicker the line

Pencil & Chalk - control shading by changing the angle of your stylus on the drawing tablet. Choose whether to draw with the tip or shade with the side of the nib-just like in real life

Corel’s Painter 11 - Enhanced Features

Enhanced! Adobe® Photoshop® Support: Maintain colors and layers when transferring files between Photoshop and Painter. This saves time when importing and exporting artwork between the two programs, because corrections are less necessary.

Brushes perform as much as 30% faster than the previous version, creating a more true-to-life painting speed.

Brush controls let you change the width of your strokes by adjusting the angle of your pen when you work with a drawing tablet. Now, shading by hand feels more natural than ever.

Selection tools include a new Polygonal mode for the Lasso tool, plus overall improvements to marquee tools and the Magic Wand, which lets you make more nimble selections on your first try.

The Colors palette lets you adjust colors manually with sliders and enlarge the palette up to 800 pixels for a clearer view of colors. You can now also fine-tune the Hue Ring with the keyboard arrow keys, so it takes less time to find the perfect color.

The enhanced Mixer palette and swatches give you more color options. Extra mixer swatches appear when you enlarge the newly resizable Mixer palette. You can enlarge the palette to make colors more accessible and provide a clearer view of your chosen color. When you no longer need to mix colors, you can reduce the size of the palette so that it uses less screen space.

Transformation capabilities are combined in a centralized tool, improving the ease and efficiency of transforming images. The new Transform tool offers convenient property bar buttons that let users quickly switch between the Move, Scale, Rotate, Skew, Distort, and Perspective Distortion modes.
